Hey peeps! My name is Benjamin Kash, and I am from here in the good ole Warren County. Before Gatton, I attended Greenwood High School in BG where I played soccer and tennis, but from my first day of high school I knew Gatton was the place for me. My passion for STEM has only grown while attending the Academy. Watching our juniors move-in and experience Gatton life for the first time has brought back some amazing memories of my move-in last year, and I am excited to see what this year holds.

During my junior year, I have participated in two different research projects, one with the physics department and one with the chemistry department. My chemistry research project with Dr. Zhang extended into the summer under a RIG (Research Internship Grant) I was awarded and now is extending into the upcoming semester. I have been lucky enough to have studied abroad in Costa Rica and England. Outside of academia, I love to continue my lucrative sports career on South Lawn with intramural ultimate frisbee and soccer. I am involved in the Beta Club, the Science Bowl team, and hopefully a Big Brothers Big Sisters partnership program starting up this year.

Looking back at my junior year excites me for what awaits the incoming class. And with rest of the seniors moving in, I am anxious and pumped to see what this year holds for us all.

Our second-to-last day of class culminated to an exciting lecture on 17th Century English monarchs and the English Civil War. Our minds may have grown weary after some in-depth poetry analysis but don’t fret because a triple entente of eclairs, crepes, and donuts for lunch raised our spirits. Afterwards, we scattered around the manor and Grantham to partake in activates ranging from croquet to thrift store shopping.

This afternoon, I found myself on a stage, rehearsing for a production that about 15 of us will be performing Friday evening. This piece is a modern take on a Robert Rodrigues classic… Sharkboy and Lavagirl the Musical! By combining the time-honored plotline of the 2005 hit with adapted musical renditions, director JJ Marquardt hopes to produce, direct, and star in a performance that will elicit the nostalgia of a generations youth with the excitement of contemporary tunes. I will be attempting to fill the shoes of the great Taylor Lautner as I take on the role of Sharkboy. Please check back soon to hopefully read some good reviews of our Planet Drool original.

Our last day in London started with a bang. And by that I mean a class quiz on short story authors and discussions ranging from a gang of schoolboys gracefully destroying an ancient house to a symbolic fox fur. The hours tick off until finally a metaphysical clock strikes 12 and in a typical High School Musical fashion we disburse into London faster than the Underground.
For our final day, some of my friends and I purchased tickets to Wicked the Musical in the West End. After some traveling woes, we arrived at the Apollo Victoria Theater. Elphaba and Glinda helped me fill in the blanks of the Wizard of Oz (and Grayson and Caleb haven’t stopped singing since), then we were back on the Tube and off to afternoon tea. My mango tango tea and pastries helped revitalize me from the emotional turmoil of Emerald City, but nothing could have prepared me for what would follow.
What started as a harmless attempt to clean our clothes would devolve into a rain-soaked, tide-pod-carrying adventure around the streets of London. The laundry machines in our building clearly despised me as they refused to operate correctly and ate all of my change. So in a misguided search for other machines we traveled across the street… in the pouring rain. Carrying dirty laundry in public while trying to avoid any water from dissolving your detergent may sound fun, but believe me it’s not. Fast forward a few minutes and you would have found us running around Seymour St. in search of a laundromat that Apple Maps claimed existed when it very much so did not. Finally, in our defeated, sullen state we stumbled upon the original laundry room across the street and successfully cleaned our garments. A 4 hour ordeal in all but a fun one.
With that, we concluded our final day in the melting pot of Europe. We have an early morning tomorrow then it is off to Harlaxton. Can’t wait to see what spontaneous adventures await us there!
